Wounded war veteran inspires as a business role model

-Nguyen Hong Phong of Hanoi is a role model for war invalids running a successful business. After returning from the battlefield with war wounds, Phong persevered through hardships to excel in business. His efforts have not only secured a stable income for his family but have inspired many others to overcome their own difficult circumstances.

Phong’s sewing workshop in Phuc Lam commune produces up to 3,000 uniforms per month, giving stable employment to a number of local women.

The workshop supports disadvantaged families, children of war veterans, and people with disabilities.

"Many children of veterans in this area struggle to find a job. I teach them to sew, free of charge, so they can have a better future,"Phong said.

Phong fought in the Central Highlands and South Central Vietnam in 1971 and sustained severe injuries. His eyesight was affected and his health was significantly damaged. When Phong returned home in 1975, he faced extreme poverty and physical limitations, but he proved resilient, exhibited the spirit of a soldier, and embodied President Ho Chi Minh's motto "Down but not out.”

In the late 1990s, noticing a growing demand for clothing, Phong learned to sew. In 2004, he used his modest savings to open a sewing workshop. Phong struggled at first because of his inexperience, but he sought the advice of successful local tailors, visited other areas to learn new skills, and gradually built up his business.

With Phong’s direction, his workers produce high-quality garments. His workshop now receives numerous orders.

"I used to have 30 sewing machines and 10 skilled workers earning around 200 USD per month—a higher income than from farming,” said Phong.

For over 20 years, Phong has provided free training to disadvantaged people. Many now have a stable job in a garment company, and some have even opened their own business.

Phong allows women to work from home so they can take care of their children while they work.

"Working from home gives me flexibility. I can work while taking care of my children during the day and continue working at night. I’m grateful to Phong, who has given me a stable job and favorable working conditions,” said Nguyen Thi Sang of Phuc Lam commune.

Phong’s health has declined in recent years, but he remains committed to his work, maintaining relationships with business partners and overseeing the workshop, which is now managed by his children.

"I’m happy working with my father-in-law. Although he’s a wounded veteran, he remains dedicated to his work and to helping the community," said his daughter-in-law Pham Thi Nga, who helps run the workshop.
